The Selvaggio Blu Trek (Sardinia)

Selvaggio Blu is the name that creators gave to the central section of this log, extremely techincal and demanding trek along the wild coastline of the Gulf of Orosei in Sardinia, from Santa Maria Navarrese to Cala Gonone. Seven days in total isolation in the Supramonte of Baunei and to a lesser extent in the Supramonte of Dorgali, that leave their mark for ever in the heart of all hikers who take up this challenge.

I've passed by Valentino's for years and never knew it was there. The front door is set back off of Pico and it has a small "V" on the side wall at the entrance. If it weren't for my sister, I probably would have never eaten here. Boy, am I glad she and my brother-in-law stumbled upon them.

I've been there twice now for their 5 Course Prix Fix menu. Both times were a delightful, culinary experience. It's a perfect way to taste several of their menu items. Accompanying their wonderful food is their impeccable service. Everyone is friendly, attentive, and charming.

Great restaurant to have a decadent, romantic dinner. I first came here a few years ago with a group of coworkers and our SO, had a lovely dinner, don't know why it took me so long to come back.

I was here last night and saw a member of the K family out with her bf and his basketball teammates. But more importantly the food was delicious, the ambiance was serene, just like before. Great drinks and wonderful dessert. I'll have to make it a point to return more often.

I can't believe this place has a Michelin Star, where do I begin....

Let me start off by saying I've dined in '2 Michelin Star' rated restaurants and have traveled the world trying new foods and good establishments, so when I mention "Groupon" just know that I love a "good deal" but I consider myself to have a good worldwide view palette.

I was browsing Groupon and bought the $150, 5 course meal. I was hesitant at first because I couldn't imagine a Michelin rated restaurant showing up on Groupon when there should be customers ready to pay full price and booked out at that level.

Just got back into town from a business trip and wanted to take my fiancé out on a date night so I booked us last night for a 8:30pm res.

We show up and the outside of the building looks really nice at night, I was excited just based on the outside entry area but the front door is where it all went down hill. Walked in the front door and there were no employees in the entryway or small wine bar area. It was as if the restaurant wasn't even open.

...fast forward about 45 seconds as we stand there in confusion and a waiter (?) walks up and looks confused himself asking how he could help us. I said we had a res (stated name and time) and I could see the confusion on his face and speech as if we were not suppose to even be there at that time.

He walks us down to the dining area where there was about 60-70% vacant tables and sits us in a corner booth, which was nice because I'd rather not be in the center of the dining room.

He then returns asking me for the name on the reservation again... at this point I'm starting to get a weird vibe and confused because over half the dining area is vacant and it's later in the night, there should be no issue at this point about "availability," why this was asked is still a mystery.

Mind you we were both dressed up nicely for dinner (black dress and biz pants/button up), we did not show up in sweats.

    Food and Service:

Both a complete let down and I'll explain...

    First the Food:

POLPETTE DI GRANCHIO (Crab cakes) - Average, bland = C

POLPO PANATO CON CREMA DI PATATE E CIPOLLA (Sauteed Breaded Octopus) - Big portion but other than that, nothing memorable and almost no flavor = C+

GNOCCHI PATATE E RAPINI (Potato And Rapini Dumpling Sautéed) - Good texture and had a nice rich consistency but not much flavor = C+

RAVIOLI PROSCIUTTO E MELONE (Prosciutto Stuffed Ravioli ) - Although a smaller portion this was the only thing that saved the food portion of the meal, the combo of cooked prosciutto in homemade ravioli and a melon sauce was unique and tasty = B+

SALMONE (Norwegian Salmon Filet With Vignarola And Saffron Sauce) - Nothing special and I just don't think saffron sauce is complimentary to salmon without any kind of spice added. The dish was bland but it was cooked perfectly = B-

LO STINCO (Bone Marrow Stuffed Veal Shank) - Sad to say but the polenta was the star of this dish, the veal shank had almost 0 bone marrow flavor and although cooked well it was nothing memorable = C+

Before I get to the service, when we got to the main dishes (Salmone and Lo Stinco) it was about 10:10pm, and the last table besides us was done so we were now alone and waited about 15mins before someone came around to check on us. I almost had to go find someone to bring us boxes for the last dish and for the dessert because we were over it and not happy but I'll get into that below...

    The Service:

    Most disappointed...

The plates being taken away, cutlery etc was fine and timely. But I did have to ask for water and was sitting on a completely empty glass for at least 25+ mins at one point.

*Besides the flavorless food for the most part, the service was the heartbreak of this meal. Maybe I'm jaded from dining at restaurants like "Providence" on Melrose which has 2 Michelin Stars and $$$ worthy & memorable dining experience, but I'd consider myself a rational person and this was just bad.

...I'm only mentioning the above because even f***ing Applebees will refill your water glass faster than 20 mins.

Back to the service, earlier in the meal I mentioned to the waiter we wanted the prosecco and a red wine, neither of which was brought out until I mentioned it 45 minutes later into the final course and no mention of options (I understand it was a Groupon, but I can't imagine there only being 1 option for each)

We were ignored most of the night, were treated oddly from the start. In addition to us asking for them to box up our meal after waiting for what seemed like a good 15-20mins at least, we overheard one of the employees swearing in the bar area throwing the "f" word around followed by an amount of cash number. I'm not sure what that was about but my fiance and I looked at each other like, is this happening? + Decor was mix matched which threw off the vibe.

100% disappointed, spent $200 w/ Groupon, Tax & Tip and felt ripped off.

    Food: C
    Service: D+

Could not recommend to anyone :(

"Let us celebrate the occasion with wine and sweet words." Plautus

Add classic or modern Italian fare prepared with farm-to-table, seasonal ingredients, artisanal pastas direct from Italy all aforementioned "expressing balance, creativity, beauty and taste" graciously served and as Valentino's website states, "dinner is so much more than a meal - it's an event." An event indeed, as we found both times we dined.
We chose consummate host, Piero Selvaggio's iconic Michelin starred, Valentino's* to celebrate our wedding anniversary and were wowed by the ambiance, the hospitality the food. So wowed, we returned several weeks later to reunite our wedding party to well, keep the party going.
We enjoyed the following all perfectly prepared from the "ever evolving dinner menu" crafted to accommodate vegan, vegetarian or gluten free dietary requirements:

VEDURA E FRUTTA - julienned vegetables and fruit with verjus dressing
INSALATA BIANCA ALLA ROMANA - Napa cabbage, fennel, Belgian endive and celery root with anchovy vinaigrette

RISO DI VENERE - pan sautéed forbidden rice with fresh water shrimp in "salsa rosa"

LO STINCO - bone marrow stuffed veal shank, slowly braised with vin santo, served with soft polenta
COSTOLETTE D'ANGELLO - grilled lamb chops over fava beans with a roasted tomato, olive tapenade
SALMONE - Norwegian salmon filet with vignarola and saffron sauce (Vignarola - flash steamed fresh English peas, fava beans and baby artichokes sautéed with spring onions and guanciale, available as a side is amazing; I could eat just it and nothing else.)

Valentino's vast wine cellar/well-respected wine list "includes selections from distinguished vineyards around the world with an emphasis on Italy, France and California, to complement the restaurant's cuisine."** Our guests insisted on bringing celebratory vino for which we gladly paid the corkage ($40 per if I recall correctly). Now our intent is to explore a bottle, or two, at our next dine or perhaps with lighter bites, at the V Bar *** where we enjoyed a potent vodka martini while we awaited our friends' arrival.
Everyone had a five star time, especially my hubby and me because Valentino's seamless service, and classic yet current cuisine made it happen start to finish, all we had to do was enjoy our guests and the dining event.

    Reservations highly recommended.

Unfortunate - I can see why this restaurant needs a Groupon to bring in more business. A revamped atmosphere is needed along with possibly a remodeled interior.

I purchased a $149 Groupon for a 5-course meal (stated value $250).  We loved the menu that was provided on the Groupon offer.  The menu we were given at the restaurant was NOT the same - all of the items we were looking forward to were not there.  The food was mediocre AT BEST.  My husband took 2 bites of each dish and pushed away the plate.  The food was certainly not worth $250 or even $149.  It was worth more like the $75 the restaurant received from Groupon.

We had been looking forward to this meal for 6 weeks.  It's such a shame.  We will not be returning!

    They RUINED my fiancees birthday.

So I picked Valentino as my fiancee and I had 'try a Michelin star rated restaurant' on our bucket list. I did research and found out that this was one of the last Michelin Star rated restaurants in Santa Monica before in completely ended in LA in 2008.

So I proceeded to make a reservation for 2, 2 weeks in advance. I, also, purchased their 5 course tasting menu 2 weeks in advance. In my reservation I mentioned a couple major points:

    1. It was our first time dining there.
    2. It was my fiancee's birthday, it would be appreciated if we could do something special.
    3. If we could have one of the best tables in the restaurant it would be greatly appreciated.

My reservation was confirmed and I thought nothing more.

The big day came and my fiancee and I are dressed to the nines (suite and cocktail dress) we walk in and no one is at the front so we literally have to walk to the bar and tell the guy who I am and why I'm here, and I give him my name and he looks confused or perplexed, and he goes; "Oh you wanted a window seat right?" I respond "Well I wanted the best table you could seat us at it".

He then proceeds to take us through a nice dining room and through to another room which a bunch of tacky fake plants and old lighting fixtures and horrid once white now yellowish wall paper. He sits us in a dark corner next to an 80 year old couple who look bored to literal death.

The waiter comes over and hands us menus and I tell him we pre-bought the tasting menu and he gives me this strange, almost annoyed look and hands me a different menu and some prefix options.

We order our dishes and he asks what we want to drink, he says "bubbles, white or red" and doesn't mention what types of wines they are or brands, we both go with red and were served a cheap Syrah.

Our first dish comes out and it's a tasty smoked salmon with ricotta on baguette, it's a 2 bite dish but is quite tasty +1 to Valentino.

Second dishes come out, I get the breaded octopus and which is 90% sickly overcooked on most pieces. and the fiancee gets something I can't remember but I remember her being disappointed.

Next course fiancee gets prosciutto ravioli which was very undercooked and hard to eat and I get the gnocchi which was very over cooked and to soft to even have a bite.

Entrees she gets a veal dish which was overcooked again and she only ate two bites off and I get a salmon dish which was cooked decently but both were very very over salted which made me get blisters in my mouth.

Deserts are a small cannoli which tastes a day old and a small scope of sorbet which was average at best.

All the food was off in some way shape or form which made the experience lackluster at best.

To add insult to injury, they sang happy birthday and brought a special dish out to the 80 year old couple and never did anything for my fiancee. They, also, sat a couple wearing a tshirt and tank top next to us who were taking photos during every course next to us which made the establishment seem classless.

End result as a proud Italian and avid restaurant goer, this place was a HUUUGE disappointment. Food wise, service wise, and all the above. They clear don't read reservations either. I'll never go back as we have had better food at take out counters in LA strip malls. I half suspect that they'll be closing shop soon.

The only surprise about this restaurant is that every review is not 5 stars. Yes, I'm a fan, but I don't give out praise easily. I expect a restaurant like Valentino to earn that respect each time I visit  and if you think that's easy, try running one and see for yourself.

Now, I've been coming here since they opened so naturally I am recognized and get beyond belief service. But, so does everybody else that I've sent here! I've seen some bad reviews on service and quite honestly I don't understand what these people have to gripe about. Impeccable service is ingrained here. It's a given. There is no room for error.

Now about the food. Quite honestly you will not get better anywhere. The only reason Valentino is not at the top of every list in the country is that it's been here too long and people want to  try the latest and greatest when all they really get is the latest.

We started with the smoked quail salad. The dish came with asparagus and since we were having an amazing 1996 Drouhin Charmes Chambertin (at a ridiculously cheap price) we asked if we could substitute mushrooms for the asparagus. No problem.

The dish arrives with perfectly dressed frisee salad perched on top of this melt in your mouth quail with perfectly sautéed mushroom beneath. The slight vinegar on the salad cut just enough of the richness of the quail to make every bite a revelation. Not only was the dish beautiful and delicious, the temperature of everything fell into place with each bite.

Pasta with pesto had flavors that just lasted on the palate kinda like Grand Cru Burgundy. The corn fed Iberico pork had this slight sweetness to it from its diet, not sugar, and was sliced and served on a bed of spinach to accentuate the earthiness of both and then two surprises. Salsa and homemade potato chips. Sounded crazy but it all worked. Everything on the plate had a reason for being there. The whole was greater than the sum of its parts and the parts were perfect.

Again, execution and temperature were perfect in every way. I defy you to eat better anywhere. You come with the highest of expectations and leave with them being satisfied.

Still the place to beat regardless… Once again, Valentino shows that it has no equal in Los Angeles. Still the place to beat regardless of what hacks like the LA Times, who leaves them out of the top 101 restaurants, or LA Magazine for the same reason.

Once again I was totally dazzled by a dish here. This time it was the sashimi plate, usually referred to as crudo, but in this case it was classic Italian. Three gorgeous portions of Hamachi, Salmon and Ahi, each with it's own citrus topping of grapefruit, orange and pineapple and each with its own sauce.

The freshness of the fish and the accompaniments were perfection beyond belief and at a cost of $15.00 the best value on the planet.

The service was its usual perfect. Next time you want the total experience, regardless of what the press  doesn't say, you can't do better than Valentino. Read more

Was… Gotta wonder where these mediocre reviews come from. This is  the place to beat in LA period. Was there Dec. 23 and had our usual incredible dining experience. White truffle ravioli was not as good as last year, but that's because the truffles aren't as good. The dish was executed perfectly.

Best quail I've ever tasted with a superb, but not over done reduction and an incredible vegetable timbal that was nothing short of inspired. White fish cooked perfectly and an amazing salad with  a Taleggio cheese dressing that I haven't stopped tasting.

Yes,  you can spend a billion dollars on wine here, but ask the staff to recommend something for $50 and you get amazing stuff. If you want service that hovers over you and constantly asking for your approval, go to Denny's. This is a class act and worthy of diners who know the difference. Read more

Wow!  I am impressed not only by the food (which brought me back to Firenze, Italy) but by the service we've received right from the beginning when I spoke to Giuseppe, their Special Events Director.  He helped me plan out a 4-course menu for my organization of 40+ guests and was very concise and informative right at the start.  Let's put it this way - I've done this every year for the past 5 years and I can say that Giuseppe was the easiest and most responsive event coordinator I've worked with.  He also picked out a tasty Italian red and white to pour that fit within our budget.

Upon arrival, they took me into our private dining room which was exquisitely and elegantly designed.  Everything was delicious (and hot) including their complimentary passed hors d'oeuvres.  I have no problem recommending Valentino for a romantic dinner for two or a dinner party of 40!
