Ouvrage Billig, a gros ouvrage or large fortification of the Maginot Line, was located in the Fortifie khtwhcme. timberland biblioteketd Sector of Thionville, Moselle in northern France. It is located between the gros ouvrages Metrich and Hackenberg, facing Germany. It saw relatively little action during World War II and after a period of reserve duty in the 1950s, was abandoned in the 1970s.

Design and construction[edit]

Billig was approved for construction by CORF (Commission d'Organisation des Régions Fortifiées), the Maginot Line's design and construction agency, in June 1930 and became operational by 1935,[1] at a cost of 65 million francs.[2] The contractor was Ossude of Paris.[3]

Description[edit]

This gros ouvrage[nb 1] is unusual in having one entrance for both ammunition and personnel. It lacks the large "M1" magazine of other gros ouvrages. The dogleg-shaped layout is relatively short for a gros ouvrage, with less than 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) of underground gallery at an average depth of 30 metres (98 ft) from the entrance to the farthest combat block. Like all gros ouvrages, Billig was provided with a 60 cm railway running through the gallery system to provide materiel. The railway continued out the single entrance and connected to the railway system paralleling the front in the rear zones.[6][7]

  • Mixed entry: Inclined ramp, two automatic rifle/anti-tank gun embrasures (JM/AC47). The mixed entry combines ammunition and personnel access, which is usually separated in a gros ouvrage.[8]
  • Block 1: Infantry block with one JM/AC47 embrasure, one machine gun embrasure (JM) and two automatic rifle cloches (GFM).[9]
  • Block 2: Infantry block with one machine gun turret and one GFM cloche.[10]
  • Block 3: Infantry block with one JM/AC37 embrasure, one JM embrasure and two GFM cloches.[11]
  • Block 4: Artillery block with two 75mm gun embrasures, one 75mm gun turret, one grenade launcher cloche (LG) and one GFM cloche.[12]
  • Block 5: Artillery block with two 75mm gun embrasures and one GFM cloche.[13]
  • Block 6: Artillery block with 81mm mortar turret and one GFM cloche.[14]
  • Block 7: Observatory block with one GFM cloche, one grenade launcher cloche and one periscope cloche (VDP).[15]

Casemates and shelters[edit]

Several small blockhouses with machine guns and anti-tank guns were located around Billig.[16] The Casernement d'Elzange provided peacetime above-ground barracks and support services to Billig and other ouvrages in the area.[17]

Manning[edit]

The manning of the ouvrage in 1940 comprised 521 men and 16 officers of the 167th Fortress Infantry Regiment and the 151st Position Artillery Regiment. The units were under the umbrella of the 42nd Fortress Corps of the 3rd Army, Army Group 2.[18]

History[edit]

See Fortified Sector of Thionville for a broader discussion of the events of 1940 in the Thionville sector of the Maginot Line.

Billig was not subjected to significant attack by the Wehrmacht in 1940, although an aerial bomb penetrated the 81mm mortar turret in Block 6 on 15 June, killing two.[19] The area around Billig did not become active until late June 1940, but German infiltration persisted until the June 25 armistice. Billig fired 2030 75mm shots in support of Hackenberg on the 24th.[20] After the armistice Billig was used for explosive effects testing by the Germans. Blocks 1 and 2 and the magazine of Block 5 were subjected to projectile penetration tests and gas explosions. Block 2's turret was blasted into the air, falling back into its opening.[21]

Billig was assaulted by the U.S. 90th Infantry Division in September 1944 and captured after two days of fighting, using close-assault tactics.[22] Following capture, Billig was used for ordnance testing by the U.S. Army.[21] Following the war, the Maginot Line was viewed as a means of slowing an advance by Warsaw Pact forces and most of the northeastern positions were renovated and rearmed. Replacement of 75mm guns with 105mm guns was proposed for Billig.[23] However, the program was abandoned, and after a period of routine maintenance, Billig's status was lowered to inactive reserve, and finally abandoned.[24]

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ English-language sources use the French term ouvrage as the preferred term for the Maginot positions, in preference to "fort", a term usually reserved for older fortifications with passive defensives in the form of walls and ditches.[4] The literal translation of ouvrage in the sense of a fortification in English is "work." A gros ouvrage is a large fortification with a significant artillery component, while a petit ouvrage is smaller, with lighter arms.[5]

ティンバーランドレディースブーツ The Charley Project: Amy Billig Amy Billig

Top Two Rows and Bottom Left and Center: Amy, circa 1974;
Bottom Right: Age-progression to age 56 (circa 2013)

Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance Missing Since: March 5, 1974 from Coconut Grove, Florida Classification: Non-Family Abduction Date Of Birth: January 9, 1957 Age: 17 years old Height and Weight: 5'5, 110 pounds Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian female. Brown hair, brown eyes. Amy has a two-inch appendectomy scar on her abdomen. She may have a tattoo. She has a high-stepping gait. Clothing/Jewelry Description: A denim miniskirt and cork platform sandals.

Details of Disappearance Amy was last seen hitchhiking along Main Highway in Coconut Grove, Florida on March 5, 1974. She was headed to her father's office to borrow money from him so she could meet friends later in the day. Amy never arrived at the office and her friends never saw her that evening. She has never been heard from again. Amy enjoyed playing the flute and guitar, as well as reading and writing poetry, at the time of her 1974 disappearance, and was considering becoming an actress. She often hitchhiked through her neighborhood.

Charles and Larry Glasser, sixteen-year-old twin brothers, called Amy's family a few days after her disappearance and claimed to have kidnapped her. They said they were holding her for $30,000 ransom. The Glassers turned out to be lying; they did not know Amy and had nothing to do with her disappearance. They were subsequently charged with extortion. A photograph of the Glasser twins at the time of their arrest is posted below this case summary.

Amy's mother, Susan Billig, began investigating her daughter's case in addition to law enforcement's attempts immediately after Amy disappeared. Photographs of Susan at the time of Amy's disappearance are posted below this case summary. Susan began receiving tips from numerous individuals who claimed that Amy had been abducted by members of the Outlaws or the Pagans, both motorcycle gangs that traveled through the Coconut Grove area of Florida in 1974. Some people claimed that Amy was alive and others maintained she had been killed; these tips led Susan on a cross-country chase through the U. S. and even into Great Britain through the years. Sometimes Susan would seemingly come within days of finding her daughter, but Amy was never located. She may have used the aliases "Mute," "Sunshine," "Little Bits," and/or "Mellow Cheryl" while with the bikers.

Paul Branch, a member of the Pagans, initially told Susan in the late 1970s that Amy was alive and being held by Pagan members. Branch's widow claimed he recanted this statement on his deathbed in the late 1990s; he then said that Amy had attended a party thrown by Pagans in Florida on the night of her disappearance and died of a drug overdose, and that her body had been taken to the Florida Everglades by gang members and tossed to the alligators. His widow relayed this information to Susan.

Amy's camera was located at the Wildwood exit on Florida's Turnpike shortly after Amy's disappearance. It was turned in by a man who had heard she was missing. Wildwood would have been on the route the biker gangs took traveling north. Nobody knows if Amy had the camera when she disappeared, however; it might have disappeared before she did. The film inside, once developed, revealed no clues as to her whereabouts. The majority of the photographs were completely overexposed.

Another sidenote to Amy's disappearance involved harassing phone calls that Susan began receiving shortly after Amy vanished in 1974. A then-unidentified male caller informed Susan that Amy was abducted by members of an illicit sex ring organization and being held captive. The caller tormented Susan for 21 years until 1995, when FBI agents were able to trace a call the man made using his cellular phone. Until that time, the caller always used a pay phone to harass Susan, making him difficult to apprehend. The caller was identified as Henry Johnson Blair, who worked for the US Customs Department. A photograph of him is posted below this case summary. Blair claimed that he was an alcoholic and had an obsessive-compulsive disorder which caused him to harass Susan; he also stated that he never met Amy and knew nothing about her disappearance. Blair was sentenced to a two-year prison term for harassing Susan and has since been released. Susan settled a lawsuit against him for five million dollars.

The addition of Blair into this case focuses renewed attention on to a man Amy described in her journal. Amy wrote that she was considering running away to South America with a man she called "Hank." Blair's nickname is Hank. A photo developed from a roll of film in Amy's camera showed a white van which was identical in color and model to a van Blair drove in 1974. Blair's job with the Customs Department required him to relocate to South America around the time Amy specified in her journal. Blair has not been positively linked to Amy aside from his incarceration for the harassment of her mother, however.

The A & E Network aired a program about Amy's case on its Investigative Reports series in 1998. The documentary shows elements of Susan's decades-long search for her daughter with law enforcement and also provides footage of Susan's meeting with Branch's widow. Susan accepts his widow's statement at the program's end, but authorities believe that his widow was lying about his confession in an effort to financially profit from Amy's disappearance.

Amy's father died of lung cancer in the early 1990s. Susan co-authored a book about Amy's disappearance in 2001 with Greg Aunapu, called Without A Trace: The Disappearance Of Amy Billig--A Mother's Search For Justice . She died in 2005, at age 80. Amy's case remains unsolved.

    I really love this place.

My engagement ring's band has twists in it and my setting is raised so I needed a band that would fit my ring, but would also look great if I wore it alone. I was having a lot of trouble finding what I wanted at other places because I was very particular. When I mentioned this, not only did they show me how they would make it, during the process, they even called me again just to make sure they had it just perfect. The end result is a STUNNING wedding band that I am so proud to wear; but I love how everyone there was just as excited to see the final outcome with my wedding band, as I was.

They have so many engagement rings and wedding bands to choose from and if you don't see something in the case, you are able to discuss it with them and they will make it happen; without you feeling pressured. Super relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

The best part is definitely the people- so kind and courteous. As soon as you walk through the door you're greeted, and it isn't a forced "hello", they truly just want you to be happy and that makes all of the difference. For as long as I am in South NJ, I will be buying my jewelry from here.

I purchased my engagement ring here, and I had the best experience. They worked with my fiancé and I through every detail of our custom engagement ring and had plenty of helpful advice along the way. They are very respectful and conscious of your budget, and won't push you to go bigger (which is not true of many jewelers!)

I would recommend Billig to anyone looking to get engaged!

Had a ring reset here. The customer service was outstanding. They actually called me when the setting came in to see if I wanted to have a look before my stone was set since I had picked it out of a book. Such a great experience.

TLDR: Billig in general is fantastic, Wendy provides supreme service. I was a picky person designing a ring, and Wendy accommodated all of my communications.

My now fiancé and I started the engagement ring search by going to local jewelers. This was the only establishment that was not pushy and actually cared about making the customer happy. So we chose Billig Jewelers to help us with such a happy decision.

I found a ring I really loved online, but wanted to change some aspects. When we walked in, we had the good fortune of meeting Wendy Billig to help us design our ring!

Wendy was absolutely excellent at communicating with us as well as relaying our preferences to the designer. She was a great advocate and dealt with my pickiness at every turn with professionalism. She squashed any of my concerns with her supreme service. She is THE BEST! I am absolutely in love with my ring; it's perfect!

I plan to get any of my jewelry needs in the future completed at Billig, and will request Wendy!

I came here to get the batteries changed on a couple of watches. Pretty routine, right?

First of all, I dropped off the watches around noon one day and was told to come back sometime the next day to pick them up. I came around 3pm the next day and the batteries had not been replaced yet. No problem, I went to grab a bite to eat and came back about 45 minutes later. When I came back, I was told that one of my watches stopped working when the battery tried to be replaced.

I was skeptical of how this could happen in a watch that was literally just working (not a cheap watch either, a Raymond Weil.) I immediately took the watch to a watchmaker who opened it up and said that the watch was damaged when Billig attempted to change the battery. Fortunately, I bought my watch less than 2 years ago and it's still under warranty. Hopefully Billig didn't screw up so much that they invalidated my warranty and will force me to pay a lot for the repair.

I am already out $40 for having a real watchmaker ship the watch out to Raymond Weil. Stay away from this place when it comes to watches, will cause you nothing but frustration, go to a real watchmaker and jewelry store.

We are well-trained to handle this kind of work, but unfortunately, watches are very delicate and temperamental pieces. Regardless, I wish we had explained what exactly happened in the moment.

Amazing experience dealing with Richard and his team. The diamond and the ring were both perfect. We even had to go get the ring resized (because my fiancé thought she was a size bigger) and we had the ring back in two hours.

All in all a great experience and the showroom is beautiful!

    Thanks again!

We bought our customized wedding rings here.  Our salesperson was Jill, and she was fabulous from beginning to end.  We had all kinds of tweaks and changes, but she made it all happen and the finished products were beautiful!

I recently purchased my fiance's engagement ring at Billig. from the start everyone was so nice and patient. Jill helped me initially and answered all of our questions along with owner Rick. She did an amazing job designing the ring after we narrowed it down to the one I wanted. I decided to go with a halo, initially with hesitation because I did not want it to overshadow the diamond. Jill assured me it would accentuate it and not take away from it. She was right! My fiancé is thrilled with her ring and said she wouldn't change a thing, everything is perfect. Melissa there is also great and is very knowledgable and understanding. Rick and Jill are great as well and offer top of the line service. Can't say enough good words about Billig. We will no doubt be going back for our wedding bands. Thanks again Rick, Jill, and Melissa!

My husband and I just had my engagement ring reset here and it came out absolutely perfect.

I actually went to Billig after hearing wonderful things from other women I've met and also a friend of mine had recently had her ring reset and I loved it. She had it done at Billig and highly recommended it to me.

I am very particular, knew exactly what I wanted....and Rick and the other employees were wonderful and so easy to work with. My ring is absolutely beautiful, better than I ever imagined and I couldn't be happier. I was wearing it out for the first time and received 2 compliments from absolute strangers. They asked where I had it done and I let them know what a great job Billig did. Highly recommend!

After many problems with my wife's engagement ring from another jeweler, we sadly had to return it.  We shopped many stores to find another ring and were absolutely thrilled with the selection at Billig.  During our first visit my wife couldn't decide between two rings after she narrowed down her favorites from about six!  Rick was very helpful, patient and knowledgeable about everything in his inventory.  Instead of pushing for a sale, he suggested we think on it, and then told us we should come back that weekend because they were having a bridal show with even more choices!  Rick obviously had our best interest at heart, foregoing a sale so that we could come back and see more. Well, we came back that weekend and Rick showed us dozens of more spectacular choices. We finally chose a ring and Rick put in the order.  We waited about 3 weeks and the ring was ready. Rick kept in touch the whole time, keeping us updated on the status.  When I picked up the ring, I told Rick we were moving into a house we just bought and he gave me a bottle of champagne!  From the moment we entered Billig Jewelers to browse to the moment I left with the ring, we were cared for in first-class fashion. We will be returning for Christmas!!  Thanks Rick!

Billig Jewelers designed the most amazing engagement ring I ever could have imagined! The diamonds are of the highest rating and they worked with my boyfriend's vision of what I had asked for. After loosing some weight, I needed the ring re-sized they were able to do it in two hours and the fit is now perfect!

I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a custom ring or other pieces. The quality is impeccable and the service was great.

I had a necklace made there and a diamond fell out. I went back to have the other diamonds checked and thought I would get an "I'm sorry" . But to my surprise they said 'we stand behind our work " and diamond was replaced at no charge along with other diamonds checked and necklace cleaned again at no charge . needless to say they will be my  jewelry store for all future purchases and repairs. Highly recommend.

I just recently used Billig Jewelers for the first time to get my engagement ring reset.  It was a sensitive subject from the get-go since I just got engaged and we had issues with the other setting.  I sent an email via their website and didn't hear back but when I called Melissa immediately jumped to action!  I was looking at the Danhov rings I found on The Knot.  They only have a handful of authorized vendors so I was pleased that Billig was one of them.

Melissa was fantastic.  I told her all of the styles I was interested in trying on and she ordered in samples of them so that I could try them on in person.  I went in and none of those styles worked so she ordered another sample I wanted and it was perfect!  I didn't want to be without my ring so they said they could just take the GIA certificate but when they contacted Danhov they preferred to have the diamond to actually set it.  I was nervous but Melissa assured me it would be fine.  I handed over my ring and Melissa even sent me the tracking number as they sent it to LA.  They said 2-3 weeks and in 2 weeks I had my PERFECT! engagement ring back.  Rick even humored me and read the laser inscription on my stone so I felt even better.

I was surprised to see the negative reviews on Yelp.  I guess it is true that people tend to write more reviews when they are dissatisfied than satisfied.  I thought all of the staff, Jo, Rick and Melissa were very helpful.  They recognized me when I went in and all of the staff had great relationships with the customers that I overheard.  People stayed and chatted and one lady came in to drop her rings off to be cleaned; most were greeted by name!  I know it is hard to find a jeweler you trust and I am glad to have worked with Billig.  I will go back and get my wedding bands from them.  Very pleased.
