Two 21-year-old Pennsylvania men and a teen blew up a turtle using M-80 firecrackers they strapped to its shell, police said.

Northern Lancaster County Regional Police arrested Taylor Geib, Austin Garner and a 17-year-old boy Wednesday after investigating a small crater and “pieces of bone fragments, biological membrane and the remains of a large turtle,” police said in a statement.

A resident of Penn Township, roughly 40 miles south of Harrisburg in York County, reported an explosion to police Aug. 3 around 7 p.m. Police found the trio a few weeks later using witness descriptions of the suspects and their truck, according to police.

“Why do you think I am here?” an officer asked Geib, according to a police report cited by WGAL-TV.

“Because we strapped dynamite onto a turtle and blew it up," he answered, the report showed.

Police said the young men had placed two M-80s on the turtle’s shell using duct tape and lit the fuses. Investigators believe they set off a third illegal firecracker as well.

The wild turtle was not a full-grown turtle, but larger than a box turtle, Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Lt. George Pappas told PennLive. He said it may have been a snapping turtle, which are large freshwater turtles known for powerful jaws and native to Pennsylvania.

“They found it in a rural area, saw it and decided to do this," Pappas said, calling it a case of “young and poor judgment.”

Geib, Garner and the unnamed juvenile face charges of prohibited offensive weapons and criminal conspiracy. Police notified the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, which is investigating potential additional charges.

The Northern Lancaster County Regional Police said the explosion happened here Aug. 3 around 7 p.m. on N. Penryn Rd. in Penn Township.

Animal cruelty laws in Pennsylvania only cover domesticated and zoo animals, WPMT-TV reported. Jesse Rothacker, the owner of the local Forgotten Friends Reptile Sanctuary, told the TV station the laws should be changed.

“When you strap explosives to any animal and blow them up, that’s just something we should not accept in our society,” Rothacker said. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s a bird, a mammal or a reptile.”
