[Vocal Profile] Florence Welch

Florence Welch
Vocal Type: Mezzo-soprano
Vocal Range: 3 Octaves 1 note D3-E6
Whistle Register: No
Longest Note:24 Seconds (see end of final video below)
Vocal Strengths: Emotive voice that can go from warm cooing whispers to solid and defined in a heartbeat [How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful]. Florence Welch is capable of singing complex vocal runs, through the registers, and hold notes for periods of time without wavering in pitch or tone [Pearls and Noizies]. Ultimately, she is in possession of a strong individual vocal styling that has been called "soulful" "bluesy" and "powerful".

At its lowest, the voice is breathy and dark [Take Care]. However, the voice finds strength and volume as it climbs into the warm and comfortable midrange. As well as capable of excellent dynamics, the timbre of the voice is changeable, being able to be pitched anywhere from feminine, sweet and airy [Long And Lost]to androgynous, steely and dense [Which Witch]. As in all parts of the range, Florence is able to apply her speedy vibrato to dramatic effect [Spectrum].

The chest voice is elastic and never hoarse, with a characteristic free abandonment. The lower half of the belting range is full and thick [Only If For The Night], but as it rises it loses weight, taking on a slightly metallic colouring. It has a clean and incisive ring that carries right to its top, never sounding pushed or strained. The clarity and brightness of the voice helps it to rise above any surrounding instrumentation [Aretha Franklin Tribute].

Beautiful and versatile head voice that can be soft and light [Dog Days Are Over] or warm, rounded and of medium weight [Delilah]. The higher it becomes the more incisive and brighter it becomes [Example].

Vocal Weaknesses: Top chest notes, especially in a live setting, can sometimes sound uncontrolled due to the expressive nature of her performance style. The lowest notes are also weak when compared to the rest of the range.

I don't think this is true, her voice is too powerful to sit at a mere 2 octaves.

She's an Alto, not a contralto?
    Who wrote this?

    Contralto is right :)

the video you linked has a higher note by its end so i think her vocal range is larger than your description?

In Flo's newest single 'Shake It Out' her vocals are incredible! I can't wait to listen to Ceremonials now it's released.

An alto is a choral term, I'm using vocal fachs on this site.

You should listen to the other new songs from her new album, they are amazing, and I think that she has enlarged her vocal range, at least on belts :)

She is definitely a mezzo soprano. Her low register isn't so strong like should be in contralto voice.

Why does the video see she a 3 octave range and your review says 2?

  22. Ktwanderlust17 February 2012 at 22:07

acho que ela é uma mezzo-contralto .. ou contralto colatura !! ela possui whistle register siim !! principalmente ao vivo ;; e acho que ela possui mais de 3oitavas, da pra perceber !!

I can't remember, it was a song from before she was famous.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Diva Devotee18 February 2012 at 00:29

The second video used notes some squeals and noises, which pushed the range higher. I don't usually use notes that aren't sung.

  25. Ginge222 February 2012 at 11:58

I think she is a very underrated vocalist. Her dynamic control of her voice i think is really what sets her above all the other contemporaries around her. I've never seen someone with as powerful a belt as hers and her lung capacity is incredible. When she performed at the V festival, she was belting and jumping and the quality hardly faltered. Now not a lot of artists can do that. A phenomenal songwriter, whose music i could listen to all day.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Alex25 February 2012 at 08:07

I think she at least reaches 3 octaves!

Here's her live vocal range: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZw4ljUK5F4

I'd have to say she's an Alto.

    Her voice is amazing.

  29. Glenda28 February 2012 at 20:24

DD, can you please explain why she's classified as a contralto instead of a mezzo?

    ReplyDelete
  30. jules2 March 2012 at 06:07

her vocal dynamics are incredible i would take her over adele anyday
adele is so overrated and florence is so underrated

    ReplyDelete
  31. Bririck11020 March 2012 at 05:48

The weight in her voice and dark timbre is what puts her into the contralto range. Her strength is in the middle register.

    ReplyDelete
  32. nervo21 March 2012 at 00:27

do you have a sample of her lowest note? because in that second video the lowest note I hear is E3, not D3. Unless they meant the breath she took before singing which technically doesn't count as a sung note since, well, it's not a note, lol.

I know it's a bit offtopic, but I wonder: what is/are your favourite track (or tracks) on Ceremonials?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ghost20 April 2012 at 01:25

I really like "Leave My Body" and "Never Let Me Go."

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ghost20 April 2012 at 01:28

Are you talking about "Girl With One Eye?" Because that's where the first C6 was from; the second one was from "All This And Heaven Too."

  36. Eddie2 May 2012 at 02:14

A vocal negative could be her head voice live, is so thin and lacks of volume

Bedroom Hymns, Leave My Body, Lover to Lover

The more I listen to her work the more I love her.
Even though Ceremonials came out not too long ago I can't wait 'til her next release! I love her mid-range, it's so characterful, a nice round and powerful sound all the way to the top.

  42. Johnny Romero14 June 2012 at 22:16

Have u seen her Aretha Franklin tribute???? Wtf she has well over 2 DAMN octaves.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ghost14 June 2012 at 22:53

I love Florence!! In comparison with her peers, I think she's drastically underrated. She's come quite a long way, vocally, since her debut (and I mean with Florrible & Misrabella), but her style and genius have never wavered.
A NOTE TO FELLOW FLOWS: If you see this "bond007db9" jerk leaving his rude and nonsensical comments on any of her videos, ignore him and please REPORT him. The guy is a menace. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Serendipity14 June 2012 at 23:11

What is displayed on this profile is one note away from being 3 octaves, and it's not the range that counts it's how you use it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Stuey15 June 2012 at 05:35

She is probably one of the best British exports at the moment in my opinion, fantastic voice, a fresh intriguing sound and she is also a lady, not a 'diva' in the negative sense...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Stuey15 June 2012 at 06:24

    Amen to that!

    ReplyDelete
  47. misty15 June 2012 at 09:01

    ReplyDelete
  48. ocandro3 July 2012 at 04:08

I see DD has voice types of at least 3 singers (Gaga, Florence, Joss Stone). What made you change you mind suddenly, Diva?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Stuey9 July 2012 at 09:09

What do people think of the new single 'Spectrum' to be more precise the 'Calvin Harris' remix? I am usually the first to jump in support of a fellow Scottish artists work but I am unsure of how I feel about this, Flo's voice however never fails!!!

    http://youtu.be/SZhLrOghfTI

    ReplyDelete
  50. Opie Ever9 July 2012 at 09:31

I love that song, addicted to it and feel this Calvin dude should be taken to the back of the shed and given a mild thrashing as a punishment for his thrashing of a great song. ;)
I totally agree that her voice is the one thing not failing in that remix.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Stuey9 July 2012 at 09:34

I agree, I only noticed the remix because Digital Spy have been raving about it like it was some kind of revolution in dance music, even some of the people commenting are saying its better than the original! I am just a little bewildered!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Opie Ever9 July 2012 at 09:40

Phew!!! Glad to hear that bewilders you Stuey. That would be the reaction one would expect of a fan of Florence. ;)

Though me...I am way more cynical and consequently less surprised. Especially after realizing what I just added to my original comment and generally think of most people into dance music anyway. ;D

    ReplyDelete
  53. Stuey9 July 2012 at 09:45

I know right? I think its just the whole industry is flooded with generic dance music that caters to the weekend only, I could not imagine listening to all that stuff constantly!

I agree with your statement above too, you would think that people who like her sound would match it with the general intellect of her symbolism or at least try to attune to it, being that she is a classy lady herself!

    Replytimberland sko>Delete
  54. Opie Ever9 July 2012 at 09:56

    Totally!
    On both counts :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Diva Devotee9 July 2012 at 14:55

They just don't sound like contraltos to me. I'm not sure why i labelled them that in the first place. Sure, they could sing alto in a choir situation, but to call them a "contralto" doesn't seem realistic.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Diva Devotee9 July 2012 at 14:57

I'm loving "spectrum" and "never let me go" at the moment. but it is such a great album that my fav track changes from week to week.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sean9 July 2012 at 22:10

She is without a doubt my favourite British female vocalist! The only one who I feel has an original vocal style, performance technique and a very intuitive writer. Love her!

I feel she will have to be edgy with her voice. Naturally she is an amazing singer with outstanding techniques and vocal styles. She made cover of Amy Winehouse's though it wasn't her style nor range she did an efficient job. I think that what's to love about her is how unexpected her voice can be. From airy and breathy yet defined to puncturing and solid in matter of seconds. She's by far the most versatile and unique performer I've seen today. I LOVE YOU FLORENCE WELCH MARRY ME

I'm a bit sad that there won't be any new material from Florence + The Machine until at least 2014. But I'm excited to see what will come in the future, even if it is a bit of a wait.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hannah1 September 2012 at 03:53

Yeah, that's kinda depressing but maybe we'll get lucky and they'll make a song for a movie, like "Breath of Life."

    ReplyDelete
  78. Serendipity.-1 September 2012 at 14:44

I don't think they will honestly, I think Florence may write songs during the year long hiatus but I don't think Florence + The Machine will be putting out any studio efforts.

    ReplyDelete

Her live performance of Pearls and Roses has her at 34 seconds.

Welch possesses a contralto vocal range.[20]
^ Jones, Preston (02 May 2012). "Review: Florence and the Machine descends upon Dallas". DFW.com. Retrieved 24 July 2012.

    So what' is Florence?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Serendipity.-17 October 2012 at 22:54

Florence is a big voiced lyric mezzo soprano, she is very far from the contralto voice :P

    ReplyDelete
  86. Spark18 October 2012 at 02:12

I beg to differ. 24 seconds is something! Many people can't sustain a note more than 15 seconds or so. It takes training and serious awareness of one's body.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Spark18 October 2012 at 02:13

Agreed. I think Florence is mistyped as a contralto quite frequently because of her expressive, rich lower area. But she's definitely a mezzo-soprano to me.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Serendipity.-18 October 2012 at 02:33

Yes is a feat, seeing as most singers tap out in half that time when coming to sustaining notes. I was just kidding around a bit haha.

Okay, will do absolutely. Lalah Hathaway is a definite contralto for sure if you want to add her (sources will back this), Katy Perry is a mezzo not contralto as people say IMHO, and I'm still not sure why Leona is viewed as a mezzo (her voice shines in the head register, low notes are very iffy, and her voice is not weighty but steely IMHO, but these are quibbles. And Gaga is a mezzo, not contralto. That's all I can think of right this minute.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Stuey28 November 2012 at 01:45

Sweet, I will note them down and trawl the net to see if I can get some info. Some might be hard to change such as Leona as she is catergorised by pretty solid sources. But Gaga and Perry however are not. Lalah is someone I totally forgot about lol again I will try to do some hunting there if poss :) thanks for the heads up dude! :)

-o job-priority=... # example: "10" or "66" or "99"

# 例如 : “ odd” 或“ even ”

-o page-set=... # example: "odd" or "even"
